Don't Miss the Coastal Dune Lakes on 30A

by Chandler Williams 13 Oct 2026

Coastal dune lakes are a rare feature of the South Walton landscape. Storm surge can create intermittent connections to the Gulf of Mexico, called outfalls. Depending on tides and weather, these connections allow water to move between the lakes and the Gulf.

One of our favorites, and a frequent subject for photographer and owner Chandler Williams, is Western Lake, in the heart of Grayton Beach. The lake stretches between Grayton Beach and WaterColor, with extensive marsh and connected wetlands. It's one of the larger dune lakes along 30A. Paddleboarders and kayakers are a familiar sight on the water, with trails and wildlife along the shoreline.

Alligator Lake is another coastal dune lake located just west of Grayton Beach State Park. Little Redfish Lake lies toward Blue Mountain Beach. Together, these lakes offer a different perspective on the coast: quiet water, changing light and the meeting of inland and coastal landscapes.

30A offers much more than the beach. Exploring its dune lakes is a chance to slow down and notice the scenery that inspires Chandler's photography. Follow posted park guidance and check current local access and activity rules when planning a visit.
